Hey Dolls...

I actually cannot believe we have about 3  weeks left of college (excluding September break)!!!
Time has flown and we are currently busy with our second last outfit.
I am making a draped long chiffon dress with bead detail, the beading is very time consuming.
I have also completedd my final History assignment which I spoke about previously (Roy Halston Frowick).
The upcoming week I am going to alter and fix everything that needs fixing on all my outfits for moderation.
I have A LOT of work ahead of me!

For the time being, here is a picture of the beading I am currently busy with!

Hello fellow fashionista's

This week was officially our LAST visual studies week, whew it has been quite hectic!
We had a very interesting task this week, whereby we had to listen to 6 different types of music and design according to what comes to mind.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it very interesting compared to the usual assignments.
We also had a drapery assignment whereby we had to use 10cm X 10 cm squares, choosing a theme of our choice.
In order to finish off my last visuals week, I decided to drape based on my collection theme.
What do you think?
I have also attached the moodboard for the drapery.

TOUGH WEEK...

This week I have been faced with many challenges. Let's just say it has not been a good one and I am putting all my time, effort and life into this degree.
I remember like it was yesterday, coming into FEDISA, not quite sure of what I wanted to do as I had just moved down from Johannesburg.
I originally wanted to study fashion editing but no instititions offered this course, so I then applied to study a BA Degree Fashion Design at FEDISA. I was apprehensive. I thought to myself- I can not  draw- I can not sew!!! How am I going to get through this!!! I have always been very academic my entire life, achieving full academic colours, therefore a creative qualification I was indeed not prepared for.
Almost 3 years have gone by and I look at where I am today- I can draw- I can sew!!! I have accomplished many challenges along the way and there are only a few feeks left to go until completion of this degree.
I have put my heart and soul into this degree and I know that it is all going to pay off.

I have been so blessed as the well-known designer, Jenni Button has offered me a prestigious position in her company, Philosophy. I am thrilled that I have things on track and I can finally start earning money to cater for the dent this degree has left in my parent's pocket! I am putting my everything into the next few weeks... the end is so near!

Anyway, I have received a very interesting assignment for History whereby we have had to evaluate a designer's impact on the fashion world. Being unconventional, I have researched- Roy Halston Frowick, better known as "Halston". He was born as an Iowa native in 1932, and was famous for his fluid, silky and sexy designs that became a symbol in the 70's era. Frowick's interest in fashion and sewing was evident at a young age as he used to tailor clothing for his mother and sister. He later applied to study at the University of Indiana where he lasted only one simester, and  started taking night courses at an art institute in Chicago, and began to work as a window dresser.
In Fowick's spare time he created high-fashion hats, and it was after publicity in a Chicago Newspaper where he was able to open his own boutique in 1957.
Moving to New York, he landed a position as co-designer for milliner Lilly Dache, and then tony Bergdorf Goodman, where he became the house designer of fashionable hats. Frowick become renowned for his "pillbox" hat designs in the 60's, which was commonly worn and publicised by Jackie Kennedy.
In the 70's, Frowick befriended and designed for many major names, such as Bianca Jagger, Liza Minelli and Liz Taylor which scorched his career beyond limits.
An unfortunate drug addiction and AIDS diagnosis in 1988 led to his downfall wherby he was unable to cope with the demands of his career and was fired from his company. Frowick sadly died in 1990 but his famous designers and top-selling perfume will remain in the fashion limelight.

THE KARDASHIAN WEDDING OF THE YEAR!
The much anticipated wedding of Kim Kardashian to basketball player, Kris Humphries, took place yesterday- 20 August 2011!
It was definitely the fashion event of the year and I am dying to see pictures of her wedding dress!
Kim's spokesperson revealed the bride wore an ivory custom-designed strapless Vera Wang gown with full tulle skirt, basque waist and hand-pieced Chantilly lace appliqué on the bodice and 'epic' train.
A vast number of celebrity guests attended the wedding, such as Mel B, Avril Lavigne, Eva Longoria and many others. It was known to have been a berlesque-inspired black and white affair with a touch of pink.
Kim wore Guiseppi Zinotti shoes, with the rings designed by her good friend, Lorraine Schwartz who also designed her engagement ring.

I cannot wait to see exclusive pictures of this magical day, until then this is as close as we get. :)

Whew!
It has been so hectic at college this week! The public holiday on Tuesday made me loose track of the week entirely! I must still post pics of my 5th outfit, it is honestly my absolute favourite!
Anyway, this week we were placed with the task of designing a bride and grooms outfit inspired by a celebrity couple. I quite enjoyed this task as I love designing couture wear and wedding dresses!
I was not particularly inspired by a specific celebrity ciuple, instead by a collaboration of Hollywood couples, I designed for the typical Hollywood wedding.
I wanted to have a more timeless touch combined with a moern edge and so I combined a classic conservative chocker neck style, with elaborate ruffles contrasted with black trimmings.
Chantilly hand-beaded lace is the main fabrication, and is used on both the wedding gown, and the men's suit. I decided to combine a mre classical approach for the male, with a timeless tailcoat jacket with lace motif moulding, collaborated with a modern, simple tapered trouser!

Let me know what you think :)

This week we have to design and create 2 story boards that are inspired by a specific illustrator.
My chosen fashion illustrator is Susan Burghart who is a graphic designer, and has designed for many large companies.
I love her fun and whimsical approach to design, as well as the fact that her illustrations are inspired by nature.

What do you think of her illustrations?

Whew... It has been one HECTIC WEEK!!! I recently finished my first outfit for my collection, sewing continuously with sleepless nights!
I am happy to say that I am really excited with the final result and I will be attatching pictures shortly :)
Today I did a drapery exercise inspired by Cirque du Soleil "Agria" theme. My chosen theme explored a mystical world within the fabrics, embellishments and colours used.
Attatched is a picture of my drapery :)

NERVES! EXCITEMENT!

Okay now, this week is one I have been looking forward to in quite a while!
We are finally starting to make our final collections!
As I always try to prepare in advance, I did my patterns for my first look in the holidays!
I have also started experimenting with the different ways I would like to rouge my first dress!
Take a look!
In between each rouged panel I am going to bead in crystal gold beads (when I say bead, I mean completely beading, without leaving any spaces open!!!)
Wish me luck!
Will post a pic of my first design and progress throughout the week!

ITS CRUNCH TIME!!!
Okay, so with 2 weeks left of college before a 2 week break, deadlines are insane, social life is non-existant and FEDISA has taken over my life.
AAH the wonderful, fabulous world of fashion! This week we did a collar sample and I have also been practicing different methods of making fabric flowers, as I am using A LOT of them in my collection! From dior roses, to my own little iventions, I have thoroughly enjoyed exploring different methods in order to obtain the best outcome! Here is a picture of some of the flowers I have made!
P.S: I have added a SHOCKING picture of how my fashion career has taken over my family bar/lounge area! :)
Looking forwad to touch hard-working week!

This week was an extremely exciting week for me as I went fabric shopping for my collection and I finalised my 9 looks! WOAH! My ideas changed countless times, but I am now happy to say that I love my final designs! I have a few worries though, such as finding the final finer details to my collection!
The materials I got, consisted of lots of Dutchess satin, bridal chiffons, raw silk and tulle. I still need to get lining for my garments, as well as a few other materials.
I thought I should share a picture of my skirt that I had so many troubles with! WARNING: Never work with stretch satin, it is a complete nightmare!
Have a good week all!

The very best of South Africa’s creativity was once again show-cased at the Design Indaba Expo 2011. An overwhelming manifestation of design and creativity was collaborated at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, establishing a commercial and export platform for South African designed products.
Innovativeness was key this year and the bar was set higher than ever, portraying the incredible amount of South African talent . From architecture,  jewellery design, interior design, ceramics, fashion design to many other aspects, creativity was largely accumulated all under one roof.
Each exhibitor that show-cased at the design indaba were pre-approved by a panel of industry experts, ensuring only the highest quality of South African design was show-cased.  As an anlyst of such an event, I was largely impressed with the standards of this years creative design talent, and found myself indulged in the gorgeous selection of designer products that was on display.
The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement from viewers, most in awe of the diverse amount of design that was on display. Not only was it a prestigious design expo, but a social event where people enjoyed quality pastries, decadent desserts, home-made bakes among others that tantilised all tastebuds.
I was largely impressed that this year’s Design Indaba was not majorly African based like it has been in previous years, and rather showcased South African design as a diverse, multi-cultural design platform, incorporating modern influences as well as traditional cultural influences and delacisies.
The craft work was also toned down, offering more space for true deign quality and leisure.  My senses were on full alert as i analysed the variety of products that were on show, with more than 60 first time exhibitors, Kai Lossgott Laser Engraving artworks, creations of Silver Spoon and designs from The Sofa Studio caught my eye. Doreen South wood Clothing  as well as Coppelia designs showcased individual style designs , interpreting classic and timeless styles into modern and trendy clothing. With a very feminine and nostalgic feel, the clothing was aimed for the up-market buyer who tends to stay classic and timeless, rather than following casual trends and fads.
Another interesting exhibitor was Maike Valcarel, which represents out-of-the-box contemporary jewellery with an African touch, entirely hand-made , combining gold with pebbles, silver and felt. While gemstones add colour. Some may see this as craft, but what makes it design is the unique process of creating and designing one of a kind pieces, in unique shapes , using originality and design to create multi-purpose jewellery with an underlying concept.
Cape Town fashion label, Sway showcased women’s clothing , styled for comfort and easy to wear timeless pieces. The textiles used to create Sway clothing are silk-sreened by hand in interesting and innovative designs, turning everyday objects into fun, off-beat patterns.
Haldane Martin took my breath away with his award-winning contemporary furniture designs that intergrates man, nature, culture and technology , with the human qualities of wisdom, love and beauty in each of his unique designs.  This raises the point of recycling in South Africa and creating products from recycled materials, thus creating a platform for design by creating something new without damaging the environment.

I believe that it is important to support emerging designers, and as one of them myself, the Design Indaba is an extraordinary way to promote and show case individual talent and design in South Africa.  Competition within the Design Indaba promotes creative thinking which in turn leads to constant break-throughs of new ideas and talents. To me, designing is about thinking out-of –the-box and creating something that is aesthetically pleasing, functional and has purpose.
The Design Indaba was overflowing with –out-of-the-box thinkers , dedicated to the unique thought process that develops an individual design. Another purpose of design that became known to me at the Design Indaba was inspiration. Without inspiration from designers, nature, shapes and objects, a designer cannot clearly indicate the thought process or purpose of his designs.
I was greatly inspired by the incredible amount of creative designers in South Africa, who have not only inspired me to become a better designer, but to create something new that has never been done before and lead as an inspiration to other individuals.Having a few words with various designers, it was made clear that the Design Indaba was the rock and platform for most design businesses, creating an immense amount of exposure that has sky-rocketed the careers of many young and old designers alike.
The 2011 Design Indaba exceeded my expectations and was enjoyed as a real treat of the mind, body and senses, indulgeing in every aspect of individuality, whether it be designs influenced by personalities, cultures, to experiences and nature, each exhibitor had something unique to offer.
I will definitely make an exerted effort to be part of the Design Indaba in the following years to come, whether it be as a buyer, analyst or exhibitor, I am sure to gain in many aspects that will mould me as an individual designer.
NEW OPPORTUNITIES!

This week was quite a rough one! With so many assignments due, I have been busy non-stop!
To practise and revise our skills, we made a lined pencil skirt. I had the worst luck as my fabric
stretched, causing me lots of time and trouble to compensate for the problem!
I did what I could to achieve the best results at the end of the day!
Besides that I was working on 140 technical drawings that were due, I must say, developing a collection is a fun process!

I have some really exciting news as well! I have been accepted to do an internship at the prestigious Jenni Button in the month of June- July this year! I am so honoured and excited and I am surely going to try my utmost to perform at top standards!
This week I have also been asked to design clothing for a Motorcross brand called "Wethered"!
I have some really good ideas and cannot wait to see the outcome!
Otherwise I have a tough week ahead, I will be going to the Indian Expo to scout for fabrics for my collectionn and possibly make a trip to Joburg to visit the Oriental Plaza!
Will post pics of some of the things I have been up to in a bit ;)

Preparing for my end of year collection is uplifting my confidence beyond many levels!
This week we made various zip and seam samples which I am proud to say I have mastered :)

This week also saw me styling my brother for an event. Dressed in a classic black suit, he looked impeccable and stylish.

I have discovered my new favourite designer!!! Australian designer Alex Perry creates the most exquisite garments in a variation of textures and colours and pays considerable attention to detail. His designs portray the sophisticated modern woman, compliment the female form and accentuate femininity.
I see a lot of myself in this designer as I have an absolute love for corsetry and draping in my designs as well as creating a glamorous, sophisticated look. Alex Perry's designs empower the modern woman and will continue to inspire me to embrace the female form :)

As you all may know the prestigious J&B MET took place on Saturday, 29 January, where fashion exploded into the LARGER THAN LIFE theme. From extravagant headpieces, bold accessories and over-the-top outfits, fashion was at it's prime and everyone was out to make a statement.

I was fortunate enough for my designs to place as one of the finalists in the previous judging event, which took place on the quirky morning show, EXPRESSO. This placed me into the final round of the J&B MET Most Elegant Couple competition, where I got to experience the nail-biting and nerves of the tough fashion world. Above all, the experience and exposure fulfilled my expectataions and it was a true privilige to take part in such a prestigious event. My bold Royal blue ensemble was a true show-stopper!!!
FASHIONFASHIONFASHION! There simply cannot be a better way to vent about my love for fashion than to start a blog! Now we all love to get DOLLED-UP, but I want to explore every avenue of the fashion world with all the fashionista's around the globe!
I am also currently enduring my last year at Fashion School (FEDISA) where I will be basically living, sweating and bleeding in order to construct the most amazing Graduate Collection ever!
I want to share my experience wih you fellow fashionista's and learn and grow through this amazing experience!
